How the Certification Actually Works

An intrinsically safe case is not simply a rugged shell — the certification (per IEC 60079-11 for intrinsic safety) covers the complete assembly of case, gasket, and any internal shielding as a single tested unit. The design limits the electrical and thermal energy that can pass through the case, and constrains any electrostatic discharge from the case material itself, so that the combination stays below the ignition energy threshold for the hazardous atmosphere it’s rated for. This is why a certified case must be paired with its specific tested phone or tablet model — pairing a certified case with an untested device, or a certified device with an uncertified case, does not carry the same certification.

What to Check Before Buying

• Exact device model and generation: Case tolerances are built around a specific phone or tablet’s dimensions, button placement, and camera position.
• Zone or Division rating: Cases are commonly available in ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 or Zone 2, and Class I Division 1 or Division 2 — match the rating to your site’s hazardous area classification, not just to the general “hazardous area” label.

The case must be matched to the exact device it was tested with, since certification covers the specific case-and-device combination. A different manufacturing revision of the “same” phone model can change fit and, in principle, the tested assembly.

Does an intrinsically safe case protect the phone from drops and water too?

Most certified cases are also rated for impact resistance and water/dust ingress (commonly IP67 or higher), in addition to their intrinsic safety certification — but the two are separate ratings, and a case’s hazardous-area certification does not by itself guarantee a specific drop or IP rating unless stated on its spec sheet.
